Coronavirus: cannabis may be more effective than chloroquine in treating disease

A recent study showed that the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine – which are highly recommended by Presidents Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro – is not as efficient as the two heads of state believe and that it can even cause side effects, such as risk of attack cardiac arrest, and may even cause the patient’s death.

Because of the search for any medication that may be, in fact, useful in combating the new coronavirus, a team of Canadian scientists has identified at least 13 specific extracts of Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as marijuana, that may be effective in the further treatment of COVID -19

In a report, which was published in Preprints, the team explained:

We have developed more than 800 new lines and extracts of Cannabis sativa and hypothesized that extracts of Cannabis Sativa with high CBD can be used to modulate the expression of ACE2 in target tissues COVID-19. In screening cannabis extracts using artificial 3D models of human oral tissues, from the airways and intestines, we identified 13 cannabis sativa extracts with a high CBD content that modulate ACE2 gene expression and ACE2 protein levels. Our initial data suggest that some extracts of cannabis sativa negatively regulate TMPRSS2 serine protease, another critical protein necessary for the entry of SARS-CoV2 into host cells.

This means that the company has developed several strains of sativa that have been tested to make it difficult for the virus to reproduce in the body.

It is important to remember that extracts produced by scientists are quite different from plants that are normally sold, even in places where the medical use of marijuana is authorized by law, so the use of any type of sativa may not be effective in combating COVID -19.

It is worth mentioning that the research has not yet been reviewed and validated by the scientific community and it is only a pre-publication.
